Chinese Medicine
Traditional
Chinese Medicine has developed over a period of thousands
of years and a combination of ancient philosophies,
practical experience and modern research have ensured
that it remains a relevant part of health care today.
As we increase our awareness about health as a society,
people are increasingly turning towards holistic therapies
to address their health complaints. Because of the simple
effectiveness of Chinese Medicine in treating a large
variety of conditions, it has been embraced in the west
as one of the most commonly used and trusted natural
therapies.
The
healing power of Chinese Medicine is based on a philosophical
and theoretical framework, making an understanding of
this aspect of the therapy an essential part of its
practice. According to this framework, the person is
seen as an integrated whole, each part functioning in
relation to the whole. Furthermore, the person is a
part of the whole universe, so this interconnectedness
is seen on a larger scale as well. The essence of this
connection is life force energy, known as "qi",
which flows through the body via pathways called meridians.
Good health is experienced when a person's qi flows
without obstruction and interacts harmoniously with
the qi of the environment. Imbalance in the body's qi
flow, caused by dietary, lifestyle, emotional/mental
attitude or other factors, results in pain, illness
or injury. Chinese Medicine involves the use of several
different techniques to correct these imbalances. These
techniques include acupuncture, herbal medicine, massage,
moxibustion, cupping and various other practices.
Chinese
medicine is helpful in treatment of most health complaints
and can be used in conjunction with other holistic or
allopathic treatments. It is known for being particularly
effective in treatment of muscular tension and pain,
digestive problems, gynaecological diseases, fatigue,
insomnia, stress and anxiety, headaches, colds and flus
and many other complaints. Extensive research into acupuncture
has shown excellent results in treatment of diseases
of the digestive, circulatory, respiratory, immune,
endocrine, and nervous systems. Not only is treatment
focused on relieving symptoms but is fundamentally about
prevention. This means that imbalances can be identified
and corrected before more serious or stubborn symptoms
develop, enabling the patient to experience greater
levels of general health and wellbeing.
